Stutter/skipping when playing audio

Description
I'm running pulseaudio 0.9.21-63-gd3efa-dirty in Ubuntu 10.04, and I'm getting some severe stuttering or skipping when trying to play audio - regardless of what player I'm using. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to happen when watching video (with sound, obviously) or when using Spotify in Wine.
It seems to be a known problem, as per this post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9286404) on the Ubuntu Forums. However, the proposed solution (http://rightfootin.blogspot.com/2009/05/fixing-pulseaudio-stutters-pauses.html) does not seem to work. Trying to switch to the old scheduler makes pulseaudio refuse to start, and setting a higher priority doesn't seem to make any difference.
Attached you can find the output of lshw -c SOUND. Let me know if you want any more information. A solution or workaround would be much appreciated, since I can't even listen to music at the moment - except for in Spotify using Wine.
