audio gets corrupted when balance is fully on L or fully on R

Reported by: Achim Owned by: lennart
Milestone: Component: core

Description

If I change the volume in gnome-volume-properties or pavucontrol I hear high frequency noise.

I have a little video which demonstrates the problem. The video isn't perfect, because it has some other noise but this is about the high frequency noise/crackling, that I hear through my speakers.

I have also noticed, if I change the profile to, for example, Analog Stereo Duplex, the mixer elements in alsamixer don't change. The result is that I still hear sound on all 6 speakers.

Seems to be the same thing as this issue reported in rhbz:

It looks like it is the same problem. I have the output of pacmd in various situations for you.

I only hear the noise/crackling of the following sliders: Fade [Ein-/ausblenden]: fully on back/front LFE [Subwoofer]: moved to its lowest position.

I hope this Information is helpful.

As it seems this is an alsa driver bug. I have disabled power management in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

#options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N

and audio corruption is to 99% gone. Audio isn't perfect clear at all volume levels, but I guess this is also a driver bug.

i don't think this is a driver bug, i tried 3 different sound cards: - intel on-board - terretec aureon 5.1 usb - creative x-fi

the bug shows up on all of them. here my video: http://christian.initcrash.net/MVI_0020.AVI

additionally i can add: if i change the master volume in alsamixer just by 1% after corrupting the audio it clears up immediately while keeping the levels i set in pa.
