RME Hammerfall Multiface mit PCI-Karte wird nicht erkannt

Reported by: pali Owned by: lennart
Milestone: 0.9.16 Component: module-alsa-*
Keywords: hdsp multiface Cc: develop@…

Description

Offenbar wird meine RME Multiface PCI-Karte nicht von Pulseaudio erkannt, obwohl diese von ALSA erkannt wird und über ALSA auch Musik abgespielt werden kann.

Habe schon stundenlang ohne Erfolg herumprobiert. Wesentliche Ansätze waren:

1. Abspieltest mittels Befehl: aplay -D plughw:1,0 /usr/share/sounds/card_shuffle.wav (funktioniert!)

2. load-module module-alsa-sink device=plughw:1,0 (mittels /etc/pulse/default.pa und über pacmd; ohne Erfolg)

Mate, please file bugs in english.

Please provide the output of "pulseaudio -vvvvv" when you start it with the default configuration, i.e. without any modifications to default.pa.

Which version of PA is this?

OK. First the english translation:

Subject: RME Hammerfall Multiface with PCI-card will not be recognized

It seems my RME Multiface PCI-card is not automatically recognized by Pulseaudio even though this is the case with ALSA. I have as well been able to play a wav-file by using this ALSA command:

aplay -D plughw:1,0 /usr/share/sounds/card_shuffle.wav

I tried the following inside /etc/pulse/default.pa and via pacmd without success:

load-module module-alsa-sink device=plughw:1,0

I also tried many other things using different GUIs - without any luck.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit

May be this is of help: I read somewhere, that my card does not support interleaving. I am not sure, if this is true though.

I use Pulseaudio 0.9.14

The command pulseaudio -vvvvv gives me this (after I typed in "pulseaudio -k"):

Could you please post that again, with the output enclosed in and ? Thanks!

  Changed 3 years ago by lennart

Enclosed in {{{ and }}} that is.

It seems as if your for your card no definition of front:xxx, surround51:xxx and so on is available. Which is already problematic. In the end it fails somewhere during set up of the hwparams. Unfortunately PA doesn't log exactly where (I just changed the git version to do this).

If you are not afraid you might want to use gdb to figure out what's happening. Install debug symbols for PA and ALSA. Follow these hints on gdb and PA: http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/Community#BugsPatchesTranslations. Then, set a breakpoint on pa_alsa_set_hw_params() and run PA. Then use "next" to step through that function to figure what is going wrong.

You wrote, it seemed, for my card where no definitions available. Could this mean, that I would neet to configure the file asoundrc?

It tried to debug as you described but must tell you, that my knowledge in this respect is very little. I installed all pulseaudio debug symbol packages, which I could find (about 10 of them). Unfortunately I did not find any ALSA debug symbol packages?! Then I opened a terminal and gave those commands:

pulseaudio -k

sudo gdb pulseaudio 2>&1 | tee gdb-pulseaudio.txt

=> This GDB was configured as "i486-linux-gnu"...

(gdb) break pa_alsa_set_hw_params()

=> Function "pa_alsa_set_hw_params()" not defined.

=> Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) y

=> Breakpoint 1 (pa_alsa_set_hw_params()) pending.

(gdb) run pulseaudio -vvvvv

This was the output:

This output is pretty obvious that you have been running PA as root. Don't do that. Please try again and run it as normal user inside the gdb.

What am I doing wrong?

You didn't follow the recommendations I linked:

You didn't set LD_BIND_NOW=1 for gdb. Please read this again:

Hmm, something is wrong here. Somehow gdb doesn find the symbol. But it is definitely defined. Could you ask the Ubuntu gdb guys for help? Probably some breakage in the debug symbol stripping in Ubuntu.

  Changed 3 years ago by pali

Sorry, but I give up here. gdb, debugging and alike is two numbers too high for me.

Apart from that, the following could still be of interest, which we did not discuss yet further:

1. I read somewhere, that my card does not support interleaving. I am not sure, if this is true though.

2, You wrote: It seems as if your for your card has no definitions of front:xxx, surround51:xxx and so on, which is already problematic. -> So may be the solution could be, to create those definitions by creating the file .asoundrc?

  Changed 3 years ago by pali

I partly succeeded myself in the meantime. I say "partly", because this solution creates trouble while watching videos. Anyway: The solution was, to use dmix. My file ~/.asoundrc looks like this:

pcm.hdsp {
        type hw
        card 1
}

ctl.hdsp {
        type hw

I heard you're throwing HAL away, how will the detect function know about my card ?

Thanks for your help

hal is being replaced by udev (or rather udev is picking up the slack). We now have a module-udev-detect. It would be good if you could test with that.

In addition, using hw:0 is back practice. You should use symbolic names like front:0 etc. It's possibly a simple matter of alsa cocking up this mapping that's causing the failure...

  Changed 3 years ago by tom-ipp

Thanks coling, I will check with that udev module. I used hw:0 because the front:0 failed. I already reported alsa (https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4650) that the driver doesn't provide automatically a plughw access for pulseaudio. Seems to be the same problem, need to track if the alsa driver doesn't provide correct infos or if hal was the culprit which udev won't be. Yours. Thomas.

Could somebody please check if 39aa1cf94d43efaa80571b3f9d3dc56297f2f5be fixes the issue?

  Changed 3 years ago by lennart

  • component changed from module-hal-detect to module-alsa-*

  Changed 3 years ago by lennart

  • status changed from new to closed
  • resolution set to fixed
  • milestone set to 0.9.16

Or let's do this the other way round: I am pretty sure the aforementioned cmmit fixes the issue, so I am closing this now. If it doesn't please feel free to reopen.

Ok. Lennart. I hope you can help me here. I hope it's ok that I'm posting. I've had some of the same problems as the original poster. If you want to see my outputs on different commands, I've done some of it before here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7860636 (same user name). In pulseaudio 0.9.14 (in ubuntu 9.04) I could only load-module manually, and even then it wouldn't make a sound. So now I'm testing 0.9.15, and if I comment out the module-hal-detect of the default.pa file, the module loads at boot. That's a good thing. Now the bad thing is the sound of it. I glitching terribly. I hope to fix it 'cause I like pulse.

I'm thinking that it has to do with the buffersize loading before the period size as you mention, but I have no clue have to change that. So I can't test it.

But as it is. It doesn't work. And the comments I get on other forums is that pulseaudio simply doesn't work with the RME HDSP. So I'm reopening this. I don't know if I have the authority, but I'll see what happens. By the way. My card is not identical to the original poster. But same brand. Mine is a HDSP 9632.

I'm sorry having to bother you with the following, but somewhere it says my kernel driver is broken, so might be interesting. My output on pulseaudio -vvvv is:

I will just add that I discovered that I had alsa version 1.0.18rc3, so I just updated that to 1.0.20. No real difference, except that glitching is worse now (which I didn't think was possible).

Zob, have tried the latest pulse with the fix lennart mentioned? If you are using .15 then please also apply the additional patches in the 0.9.15-stable git branch (http://git.0pointer.de/?p=pulseaudio.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/0.9.15-stable).

Also you do not say how you load the alsa module. Do you pass tched=0 to it to disable glitch free mode? If not please try this as it is more stable on drivers which do not have a good timing implementation in alsa.

FWIW, the mailing list or IRC is probably a more appropriate support channel than Trac.

Thanks coling. I'm kind of afraid that I might to much of a noob (though I do know my way around) to hang out with the big boys in this place.

I wasn't sure were to add the tched=0 line. As I told earlier I commented out the module-hal-detect tched=0 line in the default.pa config file, because the hal thing doesn't work with this card. That leaves me with loading the module with load-module moudule-detect. So I added tched=0 to that line. I think that stops part of pulseaudio from loading. Fx, I get connection refused when I try to open the pulseaudion volume control. So no sound in any apps this way, exept VLC which obviously found it's way to ALSA, and this time without glitches. But that's just like uninstalling pulse, that makes sound work. But I would like to have pulseaudio.

The patches-thing you suggest... I'm afraid, I don't know how to apply them. But I installed 0.9.15 from PPA repos, so I guess they get installed automatically. Or what?

The same thing goes for the fix lennart mentioned, something about not having buffersize before period size. I don't know where to correct that. So I can't test that either. But if you can point me in the right direction, I will test it.

But as it is, pulse doesn't work with the HDSP. Some people say they have made it work by installing the rt-kernel, and passing pulse through jack. But it is such a tedious setup, that I think I might prefer to just uninstall pulseaudio, thought that is not the solution I'm hoping for.

So please, if you have the patience, I will test your suggestions, but you might have to tell me how. Thanks again.

Oh. Sorry. Just saw your last line now. I will try to find the mailing list and IRC channel that your refering to. Thanks again.

Replying to zob:

No worries.

I didn't realise you were using module-detect, I just assumed you were loading module-alsa-card directly (this module accepts tched=0 argument and module-detect does not).

So you can disable module-detect and just add a simple: load-module module-alsa-card device_id=0 tsched=0 You may also have to pass name and card_name arguments too (not sure) so if it bails out try adding them in.

Probably best to continue on the Mailing List :)

I'll resolve as fixed again. If the actual fix itself is not valid then please reopen as Lennart said earlier.

Ok. Thanks coling. I tried commenting out both hal-detect and module-detect in the default.pa file, and then I added load-module module-alsa-card device_id=0 tsched=0 instead. Didn't work, unfortunately. Still getting the connection refused failure from pulse.

Sorry, but due to lack of linux skills, I couldn't test with the extra arguments this time, as I unsure what my card_name argument would be.

I'm a bit unsure whether to reopen, as I'm don't quite understand what you mean with "the actual fix itself". But I guess it's what you just told me. So I'm reopening and you can just resolve it again if I was wrong. I'll take it to the mailing list.

Thanks a lot, coling.

Well the real reason for this ticket was related to the order of calls during the initialisation phase that prevented proper initialisation. This issue itself has been correctly solved and thus to ensure the bug tracking system contains an accurate representation of the evolution of the development, this ticket itself should be resolved. You may have the same hardware but equally you don't seem to be affect by this specific problem and this is (currently) just a troubleshooting adventure.

I'd suggest that as well as seeking help on the mailing list, you should discuss things with the maintainer of the packages you are using. The packager is the best person to include additional fixes and patches in the packages for you and to help you test the fixes proposed.

So until someone is actually able to comment about this specific fix for this specific problem, I'll keep this ticket closed. If this specific fix does not address the issue, it can be reopened.

zob, the dump you posted actually shows the card was configured correctly. Not sure what this is about.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
