Sound garbled when stream is left open too long

If a program opens a stream and leaves it open for several hours, all sound output will be garbled until that stream is closed. For example, if I am listening to music in the morning, and then pause it while I go to class, sound is garbled when I get back until I stop and then restart it, which is simple enough to do. A more annoying situation is when Flash decides to leave the sound open, even when nothing is actually playing. In this case, all sound is garbled until I exit the browser.
