for something that opens the sound device for a brief period of time (like gaim), if you want to control the per app volume, you need to quickly adjust the time before the app closes the device and the slider disappears from PA.

I think all the volume control information should linger for at least 60 seconds, or perhaps there's a dropdown that defaults to "active apps" and has other drop downs for "apps in the last 60 seconds" or "all apps since the last boot"

I hope no further explanation is needed to explain the pain of this.

This has been fixed in the git version of pavucontrol. We now have a seperate track for "system sounds" which stays around all the time.
